Woman Intimately Recounts Diagnosis and Controversial Decision

When one woman, brave enough to anonymously share her story, was told she may have ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in 2001, she understood the implications. Her mother had just received the same diagnosis. In fact, in the following weeks as she walked accompanied her mother through her mother’s mastectomy and treatment, she was all the while wondering if she too had cancer and would she require the same treatment. She knew watched first-hand how life-altering an aggressive treatment of DCIS could be and being a researcher, she also knew how to research every last question and detail about DCIS.

When she finally had time for the biopsy, she received the news no woman wants to hear: breast cancer. Yet she was ready, armed with hours of research and her recent experiences with her mother. She then made a very controversial choice that few doctors were recommending at the time.
