Because of the 1998 Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), insurances that cover a mastectomy due to breast cancer must also cover breast reconstruction. This coverage even includes any surgery desired on the opposite breast to improve symmetry. Insurance must also cover complications resulting from reconstruction or mastectomy.
